Bal Harbour is a quaint and elegant city consisting of only about 3,500 residents and spanning less than one square mile. It is nestled in Miami-Dade County on the northern tip of the Miami Beach barrier island. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the beautiful waters that border the tiny village. The west end of the village is bordered by Biscayne Bay and the east end is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. In fact, the word “Bal” in Bal Harbour is a fictitious word created by combining the “b” in the word bay and the “al” from the name Atlantic. The original inhabitants of the village were proud to enjoy both the bay and the sea and wanted a name that reflected this. To this day Bal Harbour caters to all types of bay and sea activities. Boaters, fishermen, and water sports activists frequent Bal Harbour, as do people who just want to enjoy gorgeous views.
A small bridge runs over a channel connecting the bay to the ocean on the north end of the village. Residents often cross the bridge to enjoy wonderful Haulover Park located just over the bridge and maintained by the Miami Dade Parks Commission.
Bal Harbour has a rich history dating back to the 1920’s. In the 1940’s, the village itself was used as army barracks and a camp for prisoners during World War II. The famous Bal Harbour Shops are presently located where the prisoner camp once stood and the barracks were converted into apartment homes. Some other notable historical buildings frequented by residents and visitors include the Church by the Sea, the Beach Club, the Village Hall, and the Hotel Americana.
Presently, Bal Harbour is known for its high-end shopping and dining, which rivals Fifth Avenue, Rodeo Drive, and the Champs Elysees. The famous Bal Harbour Shops offer exclusive and luxurious fashion from world-renown retailers. There are nearly one hundred impressive boutiques, which are often compared to shops located in New York, Paris, London, Beverly Hills, and Milan.
Residents enjoy much-desired homes and community. Many of the best homes were built between 1994 and 2003 and are located at The Palace at Bal Harbour, Majestic Tower, and Bellini. One of the most sought after condos is the recently constructed One Bal Harbour. It is located on the channel next to the Atlantic Ocean and offers outstanding luxury and breath taking oceanfront views. A favorite apartment building is the St. Regis Bal Harbour resort, an elegant oceanfront haven. It enjoys beautiful décor, impeccable service, and luxury amenities. St. Regis is located directly across from the Bal Harbour Shops and minutes from South Beach.
