Coconut Grove

Coconut Grove , often referred to by locals as “The Grove,” is the oldest inhabited community in Miami, Florida and is currently home to about 20,000 residents. The neighborhood is easily accessible by car, Miami Metrobus, and the Miami Metrorail. The Grove was established in 1825 and is historically famous in both Florida and the United States. The first hotel on the South Florida mainland was built in the Grove. Where this hotel once stood is now known as Peacock Park. Visitors enjoy spending time at the Barnacle Historic State Park, which is the oldest house in Miami-Dade county.

Presently, the Grove is often used for outdoor festivals and events. The most famous event is the Coconut Grove Arts Festival. It is the leading outdoor arts festival in the United States and one of the biggest events of the year in South Florida. Other popular festivals include the King Mango Strut, the Great Taste of the Grove Food & Wine Festival, the Goombay Festival, the Great Grove Bed Race, and Grovetoberfest. The Grove is also famous for its diverse restaurant and bar scene. One can walk the downtown and find a variety of dining establishments including Italian, Peruvian, Indian, Cuban, Mexican, Japanese, Vegetarian, Seafood, and anything else one’s appetite desires. Downtown also hosts an eclectic selection of shops and boutiques. Many South Florida residents frequent the two large open-air malls, CocoWalk and Streets of Mayfair.

Biscayne Bay lies on the eastern border of Coconut Grove and caters to a large boating community. There is an ample amount of boat slips, yacht clubs, and marinas. This makes The Grove the perfect place for boating enthusiasts, water-sport activists, and fishermen. The most popular bayside clubs and marinas are the Coconut Grove Sailing Club, Coral Reef Yacht Club, and the Dinner Key Marina.

Coconut Grove’s strong historical and artistic significance draws many different people to the neighborhood. It is home of the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, The Barnacle Historic State Park, Coconut Grove Playhouse, The Kampong, Marjory Stoneman Douglas Home, and the Miami Science Museum.

The Grove’s popularity has spread nationwide and is often portrayed in movies and TV shows. It is also the home of many popular culture celebrities such as: William Jennings Bryan (Secretary of State), Marjory Stoneman Douglas (Environmentalist), Frank Gore (NFL running back), and LeBron James (NBA player). It was also the home of Madonna and Sylvester Stallone.
