Downtown Miami, an urban residential neighborhood, is the central business district in South Florida. It is one of the most populous downtown in the United States with about 200,000 residents living in the Downtown area, which includes Brickell, Park West, and Omni neighborhoods. It is also the historic center of Miami with urban development beginning in the 1980s. Downtown is easy to navigate by car or by utilizing such public transportation as the Miami Metrorail, Tri-Rail, Metromover, and Metrobus.

The two most popular neighborhoods are the Central business district and Brickell. The Central business district is usually referred to as “Downtown.” It is bordered by Biscayne Bay to the east and the Miami River to the west and south. This area is where the majority of the historic buildings are located. It is also the location of the main shopping street, museums, libraries, schools, and government buildings. Brickell is a small, upper-class residential neighborhood located south of the Miami River. It attracts many visitors for the popular Shops at Mary Brickell Village and Simpson Park.

Downtown has many attractions to entertain diverse interests. It is home of three historical districts, the Downtown Miami Commercial Historic District, the Downtown Miami Historic District, and the Lummus Park Historic District. The most popular parks include Bayfront Park, Bicentennial Park, and Pace Park. These parks hold many events including concerts, shows, and festivals.

There is not shortage of shops, boutiques, and restaurants in Downtown. Some of Miami’s finest restaurants and stores are found here. Flagler Street has historically been referred to as Miami’s major shopping street since the 19th century. Also popular are the Miami Jewelry District and the Bayside Marketplace. In addition, Downtown has a thriving nightlife including bars, taverns, and restaurants.

Downtown attracts many Florida residents to watch live and exciting professional sporting events. South Florida’s favorite sports teams play downtown. American Airlines Arena is the home of the Miami Heat and also hosts concerts and special events. The new Miami Ballpark will be future home of the Florida Marlins beginning in 2012.

The real estate in downtown Miami is experiencing the second life. After real estate boom which crashed in 2006-2007, a lot ofproperties in downtown of Miami became vacant. Last 2 years due to strong demand mostly from foreign buyers the inventories in downtown of Miami and Brickell shrank dramatically and a few new developers released their plans for new condo's construction in downtown of Miami.
