Key Biscayne is the southernmost barrier island along the Atlantic Coast in Miami-Dade County. It lies between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay and can be accessed by using the Rickenbacker Causeway. The center of the island is known as the Village of Key Biscayne and it is surrounded by some of South Florida’s most beautiful and most visited county and state parks. The most popular being Crandon Park, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, and Biscayne National Park. The island is not very large, stretching a distance of about five miles while less than two miles wide.

Key Biscayne is famous for the Great Florida Reef and the Cape Florida lighthouse, which was completed in 1847. The lighthouse remains one of the oldest structures still standing in South Florida and attracts tourists from all over the state. The island has an abundant and detailed history regarding American Indians, Cubans, and the US military. History buffs enjoy visiting the island and always learn something new.

Nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, boaters, and fishermen all enjoy visiting Key Biscayne. There is great canoeing, bird watching, nature observation, water sports, and great fishing. The beaches stretch around most of the island and families enjoy spending the day looking out over the sea and observing breathtaking views of downtown Miami. Local Miami residents travel to Key Biscayne often to exercise. The roads cater to runners and cyclists who are training for marathons, events, or just getting in their daily exercise.

Residents of metropolitan Miami have been accessing Key Biscayne daily since the 1940’s when the Rickenbacker Causeway was built. Key Biscayne became very popular due to the development of a Crandon Park, which is considered one of best recreational parks in Miami-Dade County. The Park is famous worldwide for being the home of the Sony Ericsson Open, which occurs every year from March to April. The Open is the world’s fifth major tennis tournament right after the US Open, Wimbledon, the French Open, and the Australian Open. Some of the greatest champions of the tournament include Andre Agassi, Serena Williams, Pete Sampras, Andy Roddick, Roger Federer, Martina Hingis, Steffi Graf, and Novak Djokovic.

Key Biscayne is also home to the Miami Seaquarium, which is the longest operational oceanarium in America. It attracts about 600,000 visitors each year and offers eight different marine species educational shows. The seaquarium is home to various marine mammals, fish, sea turtles, birds, reptiles, and manatees. The most famous resident is Lolita, the killer whale, who is one of the world’s oldest captive orcas.
